From the variables (tokens) the correct values are deposited by your contacts when sending. For example, {contactfield.firstname} then becomes Robert.
Since no contact is “selected” in the preview and test emails, the variables are replaced with square brackets []. If this worked, you can assume that it will also work in the actual dispatch.
I.e., the field {contactfield.firstname} is then converted to [First Name].
